Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Arizona
Sherwood Rope Horses
Ahhh, February in the desert southwest. Warm days, cool nights and a Wednesday night rodeo. That's right! Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek is home to the Sherwood Rope Horses every Wednesday night from 6pm to 10pm. If you're looking for something exciting to watch in the middle of the week, this is really a lot of fun. The riders are incredible, the horses are beautiful and it's a great entertainment break mid week.
I have to say I really love Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre, the arena is such an inviting place and everyone I have met there is really nice. I am brand new to roping, I haven't rode a horse in years but I absolutely love watching these talented riders. Being mostly a travel, landscape and lifestyle photographer I never thought I would enjoy photographing these events as much as I do. I am always looking forward to Wednesday night and getting some new shots. It's like shooting sports, you really never know what's going to happen and it's fun to try to anticipate the action. I think that's what keeps me coming back, striving to get the ultimate shot!
I try to put my own style of photography on the event. I not only focus on the actual sport but I want to capture the feel of the night and the emotion of the riders and spectators as the nights competitions unfold. I think of it as a mini story I'm trying to tell with my camera, although I find myself forgetting about my camera quite a bit and just enjoy watching all the excitement. I do this all by trying to stay inconspicuous so I can capture real life as it unfolds, although I'm probably not doing a very good job at that caring around a big camera and lens.
All in all, the Sherwood Rope Horses Timed Events Rodeo is a lot of fun, not only to watch but for me, to photograph. I hope they don't mind me hanging out at their competitions, I feel riders with that great of talent need to be captured on film. My wife and I did get a chance to meet Steve Sherwood and he was really nice and made us feel really welcome! Another great Wednesday night in the QC!
